The kids broke out into 12 groups, each paired with a musician and/or volunteer. These groups were then tasked to come up with a subject and write a song with multiple verses and a chorus. The groups had an hour to get creative, write the lyrics, develop a melody, and then perform it to the workshop. What came out of it are the 12 songs you see on this site (most with video of their performance to the class)!

These 12 songs were then distributed amongst 12 LA based bands to cover the songs. Each artist donated their time to create a project like no other. The 12 artists involved are:
– Fiona Apple
– She & Him
– Cold War Kids
– Tim & Eric
– Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
– Dum Dum Girls
– Summer Darling
– The Growlers
– Crystal Antlers
– The Happy Hollows
– The Submarines
– The Pity Party

Each artist/band were allowed to get as creative with their version so long as they didn’t change the lyrics. These 12 songs will appear this Spring on a Limited Edition LP and CD that can be pre-ordered here or available at the Echo Park Time Travel Mart and Origami Vinyl as well as a digital download on iTunes! All proceeds of this record will go right back in the program that provides these kinds of opportunities for the children.

In addition to this, we ask you to participate in pledging a $1 or more to your favorite song. The kids group that gets the most pledges wins a special prize at the end.

On March 6th, Chickens in Love will go live at the Echoplex in Echo Park! It will be a very special fundraising event featuring a good portion of the bands who covered the songs performing sets that include their versions of the children’s songs. The complete line-up will be announced shortly along with ticket information!
