Ancient, Ancient Mysteries
Taught by Alex Riguero
Ages 8-12
Saturday, May 10, 2008
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
This workshop takes place at 826LA West
685 Venice Blvd., Venice, CA 90291

Archaeology is about more than saving the world from the forces of evil and finding precious objects with magical powers. (Don't get us wrong; it is still very much about fighting evil with magic artifacts.) Like detectives picking up leads on a monumentally cold case, archaeologists use artifacts—from pieces of pottery, to statues and drawings, to the remains of old buildings—to come up with an idea of how people from the far distant past lived and worked.

In this workshop, students will learn how to make an argument based on physical evidence and learn some of the fundamental principles of archaeology post-Indiana Jones. Students will tackle an archaeological mystery—a dusty assemblage of artifacts of unknown origin—and each will write their hypothesis as to who made these objects, what these objects mean, and why they left them behind.

Leather hats and bull-whips optional.

Alex Riguero received a BA in Archaeological Studies from Yale University. After spending four years traveling the world, having adventures and excavating everything from colonial villages in Connecticut to Viking farm houses in Denmark to Neolithic Chinese burials, she decided to move to Los Angeles to study the relationship between art, architecture, and urbanism in nineteenth-century London. Her parents don't get it either.
