The Encyclopedia of __________

In Jorge Luis Borges's short story "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius," a conspiracy of intellectuals create an encyclopedia for a fictional world, with the intent to bring that very world into actuality. This workshop is much the same, except without the totalitarian use of subjective idealism. In The Encyclopedia of __________, students will fill in that blank, along with everything else, and will work together to compile a reference book for a world of their own making. They will decide if their new world has a green sky or no sky at all, a democratically elected government or a parliament of fishes. For fun, will the people of their world enjoy watching movies and plays, or do they stand on their heads (do they have heads?) and recite the alphabet (and what kind of alphabet do they have, if any?)? All this research will be recorded and documented in the very first edition of the Encyclopedia of __________.

Jamie Pierson recently inherited the mantle of 826LA Senior Intern. She is within inches of a bachelor's degree in Arts Management with an emphasis on Literary Arts from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is also Princess of many imaginary worlds.
