Writing About Art (And Finding It Everywhere) at The Hammer

826LA workshops at The Hammer Museum are back this fall! Beginning September 14, the museum will be hosting free monthly workshops for students aged 8-14.

Fall 2025 Schedule:

September 14: “Crafting The Magic Within Her”

This workshop from LA-based writer Heidi Lepe will
center magical realism, offering students a space to
create magical women characters inspired by
Caribbean and Latin American literature.

October 19: “Monster ER: Help Wanted”

In filmmaker Kim Adelman’s pop-up emergency room,
students will sketch monster patients, document their
ailments, apply quick fixes, and write up
recommended recovery plans. Some surgery may be
required.

November 2: “Writing About Art (And Finding It Everywhere)”

In this workshop from writer and artist Tierney
Finster, students will will pick a piece of their favorite
art to write about in the form of a review, a
recommendation, a short story inspired by the artwork,
or even a comic.

December 14: “Pitch And Write! My First Opinion Piece”

A workshop for kids with something to say! Under
the guidance of op-ed writer Ralinda Harvey,
students will create pitches for newspaper/magazine
opinion pieces, including a hook, central argument,
supporting points and a call to action.
